Choosing Aprons

I’m an expert at making messes in the kitchen, but I rarely think to put on an apron unless I’m teaching a workshop or preparing food in someone else’s home. Many of the aprons I own were handmade and remain in nicer shape than the clothes I wear in the kitchen. That has been changing after I tested several functional yet stylish aprons this summer for The Spruce Eats.

In addition to writing about the Chef Works aprons I’ve been wearing and giving my students to wear during workshops for years, I tested aprons from companies that specialize in kitchen wear durable and comfortable enough to wear in a commercial or home kitchen, including Helt Studios and Hedley and Bennett. These are aprons have been protecting me in all of my kitchen projects, from kneading dough to grilling fish to canning endless batches of salsa.

Twice as Tasty

I spent several weeks slipping on these aprons before I started on my latest meal or kitchen project, including mess-making extravaganzas like canning cherry pie filling and Roasted Raspberry Syrup, smoking and infusing cherries in bourbon, and making Vegan Memphis-Style Barbecue Sauce before serving it with smoked barbecue mushrooms at a 300-person dinner. They held up well to everything I spilled on them, and my favorites have earned their place in my tiny home kitchen.

For this piece, I also took photos of these aprons in action, and a friend agreed to be my apron model while I captured the steps and stages of making one of my favorite easy sourdough projects: Sourdough Garlic Knots. I’ll bake these in the oven throughout the year, but they also cook off beautifully on the grill. I recommend using a grill mat to keep the buttery topping on the knots instead of down the grates.
