I often make spice blends for gifting but only keep a few on hand in my own kitchen. One of these is homemade curry powder. By making it in small batches, I have full control over the ingredients and it stays fresh and vibrant better than store-bought versions. Curry powder and garam masala are great examples of easy-to-make spice blends, so we usually prepare both in my spice workshops.
These blends are so flavorful that adding either to a simple recipe changes the entire taste of the dish, like the sweet potato and mango recipe I share this week in my Twice as Tasty column for the Flathead Beacon. I carry homemade curry powder with me whenever we’re sailing or camping to use in this and other recipes I’ll be sharing in one of my Flathead Valley Community College classes this month.

Make it, share it.

Twice as Tasty
Curry powder has many uses, yet another reason I like to make my own in small batches and keep a fresh supply on hand. I toss it into an array of dishes on a whim, sprinkling it on roasted vegetables or popcorn, mixing it into flour before dredging pan-fried fish, or stirring it into a dip or soup.
Here are just a few other recipes on the blog that call for curry powder. Make them as written, or use them as inspiration when adding this and other homemade spice blends to on-the-fly meals. You can find more ways to use spice blends in the recipe index.
- Paneer Tikka Masala
- Potato, Mushroom, and Spinach Curry
- Creamy White Bean and Yogurt Dip
- Quick Tomato Juice Soup
- Hot and Sour Broth Base
- Roasted and Curried Squash Soup
- Spiced and Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
Other spice blends you may want to keep on hand include this highly versatile Sweet Spice Mix and Homemade Pumpkin Spice Mix.
